Description of the tool

Le Ring is a software tool for generative and spatialized audio composition and instrumentation.

Spatialized: Placement in space of sounds, using 8 or more loudspeakers set up around the audience space.

Instrumentation : Start and stop, in real time, of sound samples, as well as modification, using graphical commands, of their placement in space, as well as their movement (straight line, cercle). Access to the playing parameters : volume, pan, loop, duration, for each sound object, per group or for the whole set.

Composition : Composition of predefined presets, defining the placement and the movements of each sound object.

Generative : Specification of variability in the durations of the sound objects, the intervals between sound objects, the duration of the presets. Potential of infinite and always different music.

Highly interactive : All controls with the mouse and keyboard (shortcuts), visualization of the space and of the sound objects, of their states and position.


Usages to this date (February 2003) :

  • Maallem Experience Show – Series of 3 concerts – Lattitude Magreb – La Villette – Paris - June 2002 : usage as live instrument by Dominique Besson.
  • Audio environment of the exposition Chaos of Joseph Kudelka at the " Rencontres de la Photo " of Arles – July-September 2002 : usage in autonomous generative mode during 3 mois. Composition by Dominique Besson.
  • Installation DIAPh of Olivier Koechlin – Festival Résonnances – Ircam October 2002 : usage in composition mode. Composition by Dominique Besson.

Technical Requirements

I) Preparation/Installation
• Team Le Ring for installation and settings (1 person, 1 to 5 days)
•Software Licence, depending on duration.

II) During the exhibition/installation/concert :
Insidpensable (buy or rent)
• Macintosh, MacOS9, 256Mb RAM, > 500MHz, lareg hard drive.
• Multichannel sound card, externeal or internal, ASIO compatible, output 8 or 16 Jacks Mono (ex : MOTU 828)
• 8 or 16 amplified quality speakers , cabling and attachment system.

Depending on usage :
•Amplified bass speakers

Description de l’outil

Le Ring est un logiciel de composition et d’instrumentation sonore, génératif et spatialisé.

Spatialisé : Placement dans l’espace de sons, à l’aide de 8 hauts-parleurs ou plus, disposés autour de l’espace à sonoriser.

Instrumentation : Déclenchement, en temps réel, de samples sonores, ainsi que la modification, à l’aide d’icones graphiques, de leur emplacement dans l’espace, ainsi que de leur mouvements (droite, cercle). Accès aux paramètres de jeu et de mixage des sons, en temps réel : volume, pan, boucle, durée, pour chaque objet sonore, par groupe ou pour l’ensemble.

Composition : Composition de tableaux (presets) prédéfinis, définissant l’emplacement et les mouvements de chaque objet sonore.

Génératif : Spécification de variabilité dans les durées des samples, les intervalles entre déclenchements, les durées des presets. Potentialité de musique infinie et non renouvelée.

Hautement interactif : Tous contrôles à la souris et au clavier (raccourcis), visualisation de l’espace et des objets sonores, de leur état et position.

  • Spectacle Maallem Experience – Série de 3 concerts – Lattitude Magreb – La Villette – Paris - Juin 2002 : usage en instrument live par Dominique Besson.
  • Environnement sonore de l’exposition Chaos de Joseph Kudelka aux Rencontres de la Photo de Arles – juillet-septembre 2002 : usage en mode génératif autonome pendant 3 mois. Composition par Dominique Besson.
  • Installation DIAPh de Olivier Koechlin – Festival Résonnances – Ircam Octobre 2002 : usage en mode composition. Composition par Dominique Besson.

• Macintosh, MacOS9, 256Mo RAM, > 500MHz, disque confortable.
• Carte son multicanal, externe ou interne, compatible ASIO, sortie 8 ou 16 Jacks Mono (ex : MOTU 828)
• 8 ou 16 hauts-parleurs amplifiés de qualité, système d’accroche et cablage

Besoins possibles selon usage :
• Caisson(s) de basse amplifiés
